FRONT GARDEN REVIVAL
Pollokshields is a planned garden suburb
We all enjoy walking by front gardens, which are very much part of the Pollokshields planned garden design, both the villas and the tenements. Of course, it can be a struggle to maintain front gardens in shared tenement blocks. This is an opportunity to support East Pollokshields tenement residents with difficult to maintain front gardens transition to an easy to maintain front garden.
This project selected a handful of East Pollokshields tenement front gardens through open competition in June 2020. Working with owners the Ready Steady Grow team, which includes a trained horticulturalist identified what could be achieved with each garden.
The front garden revive involves a hard prune and clear out of weeds. We will lay a weed suppressing membrane if possible and then plant up with some colourful perennials such as hydrangea and dogwood, which will bring colour in the spring, summer and autumn. Plus we will add some spring flowering bulbs, such as daffodil and crocus, to bring some colour early in the year.
This project is funded by the Glasgow Times Streets Ahead programme.
We are confident this work can be completed within Government guidelines for social distancing.
